can i buy a widescreen monitor for a windows xp computer and have it be in the correct ratio without stretch?

i am going to buy my dad a wide screen monitor for his computer and i was wondering if it would have the correct aspect ratio for the monitor. it really bugs me when pictures are stretched so i don't want that. what do you think?
Should work fine if you use the monitor's native resolution such as 1440 by 900 such as most 19 inch flat screen are now days. Larger wide screens such as 20 and 22 inch have even larger figures. Just make sure your video card or built in graphic vga
