I've had it for several years now (bought it for around $500 when it first came out!).
It's lasted me through zoo's, san fransisco trips, family outings, etc.
I'd stick with Canon. The picture quality really is a cut above the others. You really can't go wrong. Just choose a Canon with the features you want. Check some consumer reviews at Amazon.com or something for any model you're interested in to make sure
